Abstract

Palm oil sustainability issues cover three main pillars, viz: environmental, economic, and social. On the environmental side, palm oil is often associated with deforestation, loss of wildlife habitat, and carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. On the economic side, palm oil contributes greatly to state revenues and the welfare of smallholders. This research is expected to contribute to strengthening the communication strategy of the Indonesian palm oil industry to build a more effective sustainability narrative in the global market. In addition, this research is also expected to add academic insight into the dynamics of media framing in sustainability issues. In this context, the mass media plays an important role in framing the issue of palm oil sustainability. The mass media is not only a channel of information but also a shaper of public perception on important issues. In Indonesia, the mass media tends to emphasize the economic benefits of palm oil and the efforts of the government and industry to improve sustainability. Economic framing in palm oil news in Indonesia emphasizes the industry's contribution to the national economy, job creation, and improving people's welfare. Environmental framing focuses on various aspects, such as deforestation, land degradation, impacts on biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions produced by the palm oil industry. Collaboration between the media, government, industry, and the community is essential in creating an ecosystem that supports sustainability in the palm oil industry. Balanced coverage will not only emphasize the success of sustainability policies or practices but also highlight the challenges and failures that may occur in their implementation. As such, it becomes an effective tool to ensure accountability across the sector.
