Abstract

This research is motivated by the low understanding of students' concepts in mathematics. This is because students have not been able to express a concept well, students have not been able to classify objects according to certain characteristics (according to the concept), then students have not been able to present concepts in various mathematical representations, and students have not been able to apply solving concepts or algorithms problem. Therefore, researchers try to apply the Realistic Mathematics Education approach with the aim to improve the understanding of students' mathematical concepts in the surrounding material and the square and rectangular flat building area. This study used a qualitative approach with Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, Kemmis and Taggart model of two cycles. The stages of PTK consist of Planning, Implementation, Observation and Reflection. Data collection techniques carried out in the form of tests and observations. The research subjects were class IV-E students of SDN S. The results of the study by applying the Realistic Mathematics Education approach to mathematics learning around the material and the area of the building of a square and rectangular flat experienced a good increase, as evidenced by the average obtained in each cycle and increased learning completeness.
